  • Kamakhya Temple Story:




Kamakhya is one of the main names of Devi or Shakti. 'Kamakhya' word
originated from the word 'Kemeikha' and which means
'Old-cousin-Mother' in the Khasi language. 
Goddess Kamakhya is a Tantrik goddess. There are references to Kamakhya
Kali in Kalika Puran. The Goddess has a close relationship with 'Tripur
Sundori'. Kamakhya Temple is one of the greatest among the Kali Peethas.
There are many stories of black magic and tantra in this temple. Till now
animal sacrifices are still performed in this temple.

  • Kamakhya Temple History: 





The Kamakhya Temple is the oldest of the 51 Peethas. It is one of the
Four Shaktipeeths of Maa Kali. The Temple is an 8th Century old temple.
Descriptions of this Kamarup Kamakhya are found in Tibitean records from
the 10th Century. 







Kalapahar was the commander of the Sultanate who repeatedly attacked the
temple and in 1564 he completely destroy the Temple. Then for many years,
the temple was lying the in a broken state. Then Vishwa Singh found this
broken temple during Koch Dynasty. And after that, the Koch King Nara
Narayan renovated this temple and the puja started.

Kamakhya Temple at Nilachal Hills in Guwahati, Assam. To go to Kamakhya
Temple you can get to Kamakhya Junction or get down to Guwahati Junction in
Assam. You will get an auto or bus to go to Kamakhya Temple, The distance
from Guwahati to Temple is approx 8 Km. You can get easy reach Kamakhya
Temple from both Kamakhya and Guwahati Station. 













  • Why Kamakhya Temple is so Special:


  1. Animals are still sacrificed in this temple. Not only animals but also pigeons, and fruits are sacrificed in this temple. 
  2. Black magic and Tantra are practiced in this temple even today. Many Tantrik is still present in this temple and resolves the miseries and poverty of the devotees through magic and tantra. 
  3. The main puja of this temple is not the worship of any idol. According to Hinduism, the yoni of the mother of 51 Peethas fall here, so the yoni is worshipped here.

  • How to offer Puja in Kamakhya Temple: 

The temple opened daily from 8 AM to 1 PM and in the afternoon from 2.30 PM to 5.30 PM. To avoid rush you should visit afternoon. If you want a direct ticket you have to take a 501 rupees ticket. Remember Goddess also goes through a menstrual cycle and hence the temple is closed these 3 days every month.
